FLY ROD CHOICES: A good 9wt is powerful enough to put the pressure on a big silver, sockeye, Pink salmon and light enough to enjoy a 20” rainbow Trout.
If I could only pick one rod for the Upper Kenai and middle Kenai River, it would be a 9’8 wt
I always provide guests with at least one appropriate rod for the fishing conditions.
6wt-Good all around trout rod able to handle an incidental sockeye.
7wt-9wt The best all-around rod choice. Perfect for targeting sockeye and silver salmon. None too heavy for many of our Rainbow trout and Dolly Vardens

Sport fisherman targeting sockeye add weight to their 9’ leader until they get the desired drift. Casting is not pretty, but no one complains about the results.
Silver Salmon are usually targeted in slower water pooling or slack water areas where a floating line and weighted fly approach works best.
Pink Salmon can be fished on every even numbered year through out the river. Pink Salmon are awesome for beginners since they come up the river in droves. Bulldog fishing target fresh female pink salmon down towards the title water, not to far from the mouth of the Kenai river. Fresh Chrome Female Pink Salmon have very firm meat which results in an awesome barbeque or great sashimi with wassail. |

Your Alaska Fly Fishing Guide is an excellent fly-fishing instructor and this is a great chance for beginners to learn the basics of fly-fishing. As with all of our Kenai River Alaska Fly Fishing Charters, we welcome beginners and we specialize in hands on instruction for those who would like to learn.

What to bring for fishing gear:
For Rainbow Trout on the Middle Kenai River I like to use a 7 or 9 weight fly rod. During a day of fishing a fisherman may encounter large deep water, wind or even an unintended Sockeye or King Salmon. Because of this I like to use the heavier rods. Also a long rod, like an eight and a half to nine and a half foot in length is a good choice for this river.
Most all of our fishing will be with weight forward floating lines. The best choice in leaders is ten foot with a 10, 12 and 16 lb. tippets. A long leader proves to be an asset when split shot are added to take a fly to the bottom. At times a strike indicator is in order to pick up on light biting Rainbow Trout, Char, and Dolly Varden
Waders (a must if drift boating), polarized sun glasses, sun screen, hat, gloves, warm coat (down, thinsulate or pile is recommended), casual clothing, for 40 or 60 degree weather (cooler in September and October), warm socks, good rain gear, camera and film, personal items and medicines. Kenai and Soldotna are modern communities with year around populations of approximately 5,000 each. Restaurants, retail, grocery and liquor stores are all centrally located.
